Property For Sale

The Poughkeepsie Friends Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends is considering relocating to a new place of worship, after residing in its current meeting house at 249 Hooker Avenue since 1927.  The Friends Meeting House was designed and built for a much larger pastor-led meeting The Friends discontinued their programmed (pastor-led) meeting for worship in the 1980s and returned to the traditional unprogrammed worship style of the early Friends of the 1600s in England.  Friends worshiping in this traditional style do not have a pastor but instead gather in expectant silence centering on the Inward Light and sharing Spirit-led ministry with one another.  Accordingly, the large meeting room designed for a pastor-led meeting was rarely used and the parsonage adjacent to the meeting house has not been used as such since the 1960’s.  In keeping with Friends' testimonies of simplicity and stewardship, the present congregation of approximately 50 active members and attenders is looking for space that more closely aligns with its needs.

Poughkeepsie Friends (Quakers) will be considering options for relocating in the city or town over the coming months, as the property is offered for sale to other congregations, non-profit organizations, or commercial buyers. As the meeting house is of historical significance and holds many dear memories for Friends, a buyer will be sought who is willing to retain the outward appearance of the structure as seen from the street, so that the face and character of the neighborhood may be preserved.  Interested principals should contact Prudential Serls for more information.
